My girls are giving plenty of milk and CREAM, just in time for Thanksgiving treats.

Well, it's winter here. How about where you are? It sure did catch us off guard this year. We had to seriously scramble to get everything winterized.

I had to laugh at Jasper going on point yesterday telling me chickens were nearby.

Sure enough, there they were acting chicken about going beyond where I'd shoveled the snow.

Lovely pictures MaryJane. Snow, chickens, Jasper and Curious the Cow.
Our oldest daughter (27) just loves Jasper. She commented once, If something ever happens to that cat, I don't want to hear about it. She said the same thing about Charlene's orange midwife kitty. Yes, she is a cat lover
I just got back from Washington yesterday for the second time. Tom and I went up late October, then Austin and I did a marathon run. Left last Wednesday and got home yesterday. Sore bum to say the least.
I got a couple of wonderful pictues outside I will post when I get a chance to catch up. Didn't take any in the house, as folks still have their belongings in there. They have become like family, but want to respect their privacy as well.
It snowed while Austin and I were there. I am so looking forward to the new life up there. It will sure be a welcome change.
Thanksgiving in just under two weeks. Already....Sheesh, where has the year gone?

| Yes, grand photos! Milk and cream a win win. You have snow! We are in the 50's-60's this week. Lots going on. Drying up Darla, weaned her calf Hoss. Estella came in heat so she was AI'd the first time and did wonderful. She goes to the stanchion, let's me wash her and even trial runs with the milk machine and all is good. She is a sweetheart. Hannah is doing well. Still falls now and then but can get up on her own. She is downing a good share of Nellie's milk but we still have plenty for everyone. Gardens are cleaned off, compost added and tilled ready for next spring when we will till again if we are able. So happy for you Darla and your adventure of your new home. So excited for you. Waiting has to be the hard part, but so worth it. Well, it's time for chores and milking. Good to see all is going well for everyone. Take care. |

Wonderful to hear that Hannah is still Hannah and showing spunk. And sweet Estella knows she wants to be a milk cow when she grows up.
Speaking of growing up, it makes my heart ache to see how fast my oldest grand girl is sprouting wings.
Here's her Thanksgiving cake. It took her several days to make it; first she made leaf cookies (recognize the mold Janet?), then a strudel for the bottom, then a pie filling for the middle, then the cake itself.

Now, here's a little someone who ISN'T going to get her favorite meal tomorrow. I gave up weaning Rosetta and installed a nose device called a quiet wean.
Has anyone seen this before on a pond? There are two of them on our pond. Air holes for pond critters?
I'm grateful for many things this Thanksgiving, but the one thing that gives me grateful feelings daily is the view from my office window looking down on my cows.

| Beautiful grand girl, and look at that cake! A masterpiece! I'm afraid things are a bit minimal this year for Thanksgiving. My hands are full of challenges, not all good, and not all bad. Hannah isn't doing well. She isn't able to get up or stand for long periods of time. I'm trying to decide where I go next with her, and for today it's still working with her, getting her up to nurse Nellie, helping her stand for as long as her legs will hold her, then helping her back to the ground. She developed hypothermia the other day outdoors. Cold and rain and she evidently fell and couldn't get back up, so when I found her she was in bad shape. I was alone and it took all I had to get her inside to her stall. It's a long story, but she made it through that, but hasn't been the same since. My dog isn't any worse, perhaps a tad better, it's hard to tell just yet. Suppose to be 50 degrees today and turn cold so we will be butchering our fryers this afternoon. Oyster soup for lunch and probably supper. Don't have time to prepare a large meal. Hoping you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and joy in making memories with family. Health and happiness to all! Your views from your window are breathtaking MaryJane. Our pond hasn't froze over yet so not sure. :) We all have much to be thankful for. |

Sorry to hear about Hannah. Do you think she has a cow's equivalent of cerebral palsy, possibly because she came out feet first? I've sure been hoping she'd rally. Heartbreaking. Sorry Janet.
My mother always made oyster soup or sometimes clam chowder the night before Christmas. We thought it was an exotic meal meant only for a special occasion.
Speaking of butchering fowl, Brian and Ashley butchered one of their heritage toms last Sunday. Nick and I were in attendance; pretty much watching and nothing else.
Here he is today, about to go into the oven.
I'm experimenting with some small pumpkin cakes made from almond flour. Remains to be seen if they turn out.
I did take some time to go for a long bike ride today. The sun was out and I realized I haven't been on my bike for months.

| It's okay. Hannah will get better or she won't, but only time will tell. As long as she's willing to live I'm willing to help her. I've ordered new, larger splints for her, should be here first of the week. She has outgrown her smaller ones. Once we get her up, she nurses, and she eats grain and hay. So appetite isn't the problem. I'm still able to manipulate her neck back into place, but it doesn't stay. She stays up on her feet for a couple of hours at a time and I'm hoping that increases once the splints arrive. We managed to get 8 fryers dressed. I found them more difficult because of the smaller size. The broilers were easier. Your turkey was a nice big size. Hope you all had a joyous time. I'm sure your pumpkin cakes were a success. I haven't had much "me" time lately, but hoping things improve to allow more of that in the future. Sunshine today in the mid-fifties. Perhaps a little time in the grove. Need to prune roses back today while the weather cooperates, but first it's time to get Hannah up to nurse Nellie and some standing and walk time for her. |
