I was reading an article in the Acres Magazine last night and one woman talked about completing a Holistic Management International Beginning Women Farmers and Ranchers course. I think someone here in the chat room talked about something similar in Texas, but I am wondering if somewhere it would be offered online? I could not find anything in the state of Idaho. But maybe I am missing something?

I would start by asking at both our universities. I've come across programs as such in Spokane but local seems like a good place to start looking.

Pruning Workshop with Jeff Herman and Wakan Burrows.
March 5, 10am - noon - at Heartsong in Tumtum, WA
Come and learn pruning and tree care from two of our region’s most knowledgeable tree people.
Jeff Herman and his wife planted their certified organic orchard
in 1982 and their fruit is renowned throughout the region.
Wakan Burrows is a practicing permaculturist and arborist who has a keen eye for good technique.
Bring your own, sharp hand clippers, loppers and pruning saws.
Workshop: $35 per person, 16 yrs. and younger, $5. Please pre-register.
Followed by a potluck lunch. Potluck is free after the workshop ends. Bring food to share and your own table settings.

can't wait to see what you do. i am interested too, but i gotta get things a bit more underway here on the homestead before i take on anything else.

| charlene, i am adding this to my goals for 2017. i just can't do it in 2016, but it really excites me. i am especially interested in the "Holistic Grazing Planning" and "Holistic Land Planning" as those are things lover boy and i revisit often and we have to do a lot of research to make decisions and assure ourselves we are moving in the right direction. some actual instruction in it would be helpful for us. |

Maybe we could both make it a goal for 2017 and keep each other accountable? I think I may just be too busy this year with another barn building and sorting out Cecily's adult needs. But I so want to do this!
I had a friend stop by today. She lives on 40 acres and loves being out in the country; however, she has no desire to do anything with her property! To be fair, she is an incredible woman with a fantastic family and her family is her focus right now. It's hard for me to imagine not wanting to do something with that precious land. The feeling of growing your own food or replenishing the ground is so satisfying. Just a different perspective and the world would be a very boring place if we were all alike! I did talk to her about only milking once a day...she thought it had to be twice a day and her daughter wanted a cow, but she's not a morning person. So perhaps I'll get her going with MJ's book and change her perspective. |

There is a class that is just now starting on the link that Cindy provided above! Have to register before January 18th! Can't do it now, but it is on my goal list!
Instead I just signed up for a CPR and first aid class ... a requirement for my daughter's future care. But what a good one! Parts of the class are on-line and then the final part is hands on. I'll see how good I am with on-line courses this way! Then I'll be ready for the Holistic Management courses... |

| charlene i would be VERY open to doing this as accountability partners for 2017! i am retiring from one of by board of directors positions in August of this year, so that right there frees up about 10-15 hours per month. i am very good about making things happen if i can plan for them, i just know with my lovely cows i gotta concentrate on that for 2016 ;> |

I know I will be learning lots and it will be great to share our highlights!
It will be a commitment as it requires a few hours every single week but I think the knowledge learned would be fantastic. |

charlene, i am super excited. as i am a finance gal i can make that part easy for us if you have questions, and i know you are much farther ahead with farm and herd management so you can help me there. and everyone on HJO can help us also.
i really could use the land management and grazing classes THIS year, but the fact there is only 24 hours in each day is really getting in my way! i need at least 6 hours of sleep daily, and i would love 7 but tend to prioritize an hour in the tub with a good book ahead of more sleep ;> this morning i actually got up at 5am and went straight to the tub instead of sleeping longer, it just feels great to start the day that way. |

I graduated from HMI Beginning Farming and Ranching Women in Texas program Spring 2014. I will find out about online classes. The HMI Texas educator is one of my milk customers (when I am open for business).
Cindy, I am not sure if you are located close to Canton, Texas, but there is a HMI Leader there and she has monthly meetings. Actually last weekend I travelled to east Texas to buy a compost tea sprayer that she had fitted out in Tyler at Rozell's.
The monthly HMI class is the 27th and I will probably go to audit. All ex-graduates are welcome to freshen up on topics if needed.
Tomorrow evening in Waco, Kit Pharo from Pharo Cattle Company will be speaking on grass-fed cattle genetics. They are beef seed stock genetic providers and very knowledgeable.
Also, February 20-21, there will be a Mother Earth. News Fair in Belton, Texas. I plan to attend both days, the workshops look great.
Maybe this will help. I will get back with some information about HMI. ;) |

Holistic Management International offers online programs at
holisticmanagement.org and click on Training programs.
Most states have instructors so maybe you can find a group in Idaho,
because Texas is a very very long way for a farm girl. :) |

My head is barely above water ... in fact, I keep bobbing! But I think I'm on the same page as Cindy as I will start investigating later this year. On line courses seem to fit into my life right now; although, the hands-on part or if you, Cindy, find an extraordinary class/seminar to take ... ok, I'll stop dreaming now.
