My husband was raised next door to his grandpa's small dairy farm of mixed breed cows. He remembers the old fridge on the porch full of milk and the neighbors paying by honor system.
While we had no intent to be a dairy, we bought two bred Jersey cows and dreamt of Spring calves and fresh, Raw Milk. Before Sweet Cream and Buttermilk calved I had never milked anything. They hadn't been handled much and never milked. I learned a lot VERY quickly, mostly about being patient and observant. Both cows went on to be family milk cows and I was praised for their wonderful manners during milking.
We specialize in raising trained family milk cows. We've placed several trained cows but we're still learning and refining our methods. No homesteader will tell you they don't learn something new nearly every day!
We currently have two cows, three heifers, a bull, six barn cats, four LGDs, and ten chickens. We'll be relocating most of them next Spring from a rented farm in Kansas to a permanent homestead in Idaho. |

welcome from east texas! i am a newbie at this cow thing, but been on hjo for quite awhile as i have been dreaming and planning for the cows to join the family for years (and we got them this September!). you are light years ahead of me in experience and i enjoy reading what you have going on.

| Thank you, Sydney2015 and txbikergirl, for your warm welcome. It's been very rewarding to see those first two cows become a grandmother and great-grandmother this year. We're beyond excited to move for the last time. I can't wait for a real milking parlor, permanent systems for things like lights, water, heated troughs... We bought the bare land in 2010 and finally build the house ourselves next Summer. It's quite the adventure! |

Your cows are beautiful and I loved reading your story! That's wonderful that you specialize in raising family milk cows. What a blessing for so many families that are getting into cow ownership for the first time, and making the process that much easier and enjoyable for them.
I'm from Michigan and my husband, 2 little kiddos and myself got our first cow this summer. I absolutely love it!

your property is just beautiful. we live in the piney woods of texas and thank god for those tall trees and green pastures every day. best of luck with your move, and look forward to seeing more photos and hearing about your journey. i'm a newbie to this cow thing, but my heart and soul is in it and i truly feel like i am home when milking and caring for my cows. someone really special sold me two wonderful cows and i am forever grateful to her ;> |

Another welcome from a future neighbor! I live in Idaho. Where exactly is your homestead located? Our little farm is over the ridge from MaryJane's farm.
What kinds of LGD's do you have? I've thought on and off for quite a while about getting one; and am still thinking. We have enough close neighbors that I wouldn't want my dogs to be a nuisance and our acreage is not fully fenced yet. I'd love one to live with my goats and protect the farm and family ... a multipurpose LGD and not sure that is completely possible but I've read some amazing things about these dogs. They can bond with their people family and still bond with their farm animals, too.
This chatroom has been a very useful source of information and a wonderful place to meet new friends!
