Hi there. This isn't really an emergency but I didn't know where else to post this:)

About a month ago I noticed my Millie has had what I thought was a wart on the very tip of her teat. I did some research and found something that said most of the time these just fall off on their own. So I stopped worrying about it.

About two weeks ago when I went out to milk her she had blood dripping from that same teat. I wiped it away and it revealed a sting of some sort. I assumed it was from a horse fly. The sting caused her teat to swell, so I cleaned it up really well and milked that teat really gently.

The next morning when I went out to milk it was so much better you couldnt even tell anything had happened. But a few days later I started to notice little dots in the milk strainer, which no doubt was a sign of mastitis. I am assuming that the sting might have caused some trauma to her teat causing the mastitis. I have started to give her Vitamin C hoping that it will clear up.

This morning when I was milking I noticed that the wart is really getting bigger and now beginning to obstruct the hole where her milk comes out. It also makes it difficult to get dirt and dust that collects in that little hole. Normally when I wash her bag what little is there is washed away. But with the wart or lump I really have to work to get the dirt out of that crevice before I milk that teat. I am wondering if that might be aggravating or even contributing to the mastitis.

Has this ever happened to anyone? Do you have any suggestions as to what the lump might be? Does it sound like a wart or something different? Any ideas for treatment? Thanks so much for your time:)

Have you done the actual California Mastitis test? You mention "dots in the milk strainer" but I'm wondering if she has been actually tested for mastitis? And, yes, photos would help if that is even possible ... you need a selfie stick just renamed an udder photo stick!

I am also rather a newbie at cows, so will let someone else give their two-cents.

This is the point at which I would take good photos and send them to my vet to get advice. Seems like they'd want to remove the wart before it gets any bigger and also determine whether or not your girl has mastitis. I agree with Charlene, a California Mastitis Test would be beneficial to help you zoom in on what to try next. I always like knowing that (in fact I do it daily every time I milk) and also getting/taking a temp when something doesn't seem right.

A temperature will be one of the first things a vet will ask you! I forgot about that and MaryJane is exactly correct.

Please let us know what you find out and how Millie does.

Sorry for the lack of photos! I took some this morning. Thanks for the input about this! I have done the mastitis test and the one teat is showing a slight coagulation. I have felt around for lumps or hardness on her udder and she seems to be clear of that. I have been treating her with the vitamin c powder for three days now This morning when I poured up the milk there was still yellow specks left in the filter. No signs of blood or anything. When I milk her she shows no signs of pain or discomfort. I am going to take yalls advice and ahead and call the vet out to take a look at her. Thanks again everybody!!

Is this what they call Papillomatosis? Warts. Virus that can be spread to other cows. There is also a vaccine to prevent them. Don't know much about it except what I read in my cattle health book and online. I read where they usually disappear on there own over a period of months. If the wart start to occlude the flow of milk it would need to be surgically removed. Hope all turns out well. Good pictures of the wart and location.

Be sure to let us know what the vet says. And thanks for the clear, close-up photos.
