Wasn't quite sure where to post this, but I figured housing was a good spot!
Tom installed two cameras for me yesterday. Here is a shot of LacyLou trying to lay in a comfortable position, as she is due a week from today.

| This is super cool Darla. I plan on doing this too, but know very little about the camera and set up etc. You will be able to see any change in LacyLou from he laptop. I need this to save myself many trips to the parlor as it's quite a distance from the house. Thanks for sharing this Darla. I see LacyLou and want to push. :) |

Janet, I have no idea all the particulars as far as set up. Tom is such a master at all this stuff, I just go with the flow when he says he wants to do something. Sometimes it drives me batty, but then I get things like this. I am so grateful to have his do these things for me.
Right now out in the shop he has a vintage Jukebox he is completely redoing for a neighbor gal who bought it at an auction. It had no power, so not only did he power it up, he is redoing the whole thing for her. He said this is great, I always wanted to know how they work. My comment was be careful what you wish for!!

| I wired a camera for my chimney swift tower several years ago, but we dug a line for that one and ran it up to the house. I would rather put in wireless for the milk parlor. I'll figure it out, just need to do it before May. |

Darla, ask Tom if the cameras have gotten sophisticated enough not to mind the fact that my house and also my parlor are covered in metal. Cell phone signals barely work. I would put a camera in lickety split if I could get one that didn't mind all the metal. I tried baby monitors, etc. early on but it was a total bust. Perhaps there is an antennae that can go in the windows or something. Your set-up is fabulous!!! Lacy Lou is definitely a lacy lady in waiting.
Just got back from a bike ride. My studded tires sure do work in the snow and ice. Now if I could just monitor calf watch. Such peace of mind. |

MaryJane, this is not a wireless set up. If you look at the upper left corner of the picture you can see just a partial glimpse of our huge solar panel setup. (That Tom did of course) For that we dug a big long trench from the house clear out to the solar for all the wiring. In that trench he also put a network wire so he can monitor the solar. So it has something network related that Tom hooked the camera box to temporarily. My new barn is in the works, and when that goes up we are going to install a network something or another in there that is permanent. I read your post to him and his reply was "if she buys me a ticket, I'll come up and set her up wireless" That was with a big smile!! I will get more details on from him on what you need. He mumbled something that was totally Greek to me. He has done his nightly fall asleep in the chair, so I will get info for you in the morning on what he was talking about. He said it would not be impossible for you to set something up. If any one would know it's this guy.
P.S. Thank God for the gas powered trencher.

| Well, it sounds like something I need to add to my project list and not something I can do in an afternoon. There won't be any trenches (gas-powered or otherwise) being dug any time soon, with more snow on the way. Your set-up is sweet. I didn't know you had solar panels. That's one of my dreams also. Where would we be without our project lists? A farmgirl can dream, right? I dream of a camera like Lacy Lou has! |

Janet and MaryJane. This isn't a super clear picture, but it is shot from one of the barn cameras over 50 feet away and I cropped it on top of it. Miss Lacy wants out with the sheep, but not right now. Keeping her closer to the barn for so I can move her in quickly if need be
P.S. I did a zoom on it also, which gave it a bit of a grainy look. Without doing that the picture is clear. Both cameras run a live video feed, and you can snap shot a picture to download. I'm still in the learning curve of this thing |

maryjane, wanted to let you know we installed a wi-fi camera for our barn in february and it works great. it isn't expensive, but involves a few pieces and lover boy (geek extraordinaire) said that it is a pain to install, but once up and running is a dream.
like you, we dont have ethernet/network/internet wired access at our barn. and getting any type of cell or air signal is impossible for us. so he did the home station on the house roof, with a line of sight connection on the barn roof connected to a camera. and i am pretty good tech wise but this is way beyond me ;>
brand is dahua IPC-HFW1320S 3MP HD network mini IR bullet security IP camera 2.8mm lens ...
then added a wireless point to point link at each end that are in line of sight for transmission...
ubiquiti nsm5 bi=undle of 2 nanostation m5 5ghz outdoor airmax cpe 150+ mbps at+km (so one on the house roof and one on the barn roof).
he said that both are "ethernet powered" but we dont have ethernet/network cable pulled so he got the "ethernet power inserters" that convert electrical power to use for these babies.
lover boy also said that anyone not IT savvy will find all of this much too difficult, but if they are it is more fiddly than difficult. if you have someone and they want to chat with lover boy we can hook them up ;>

| maryjane, forgot to mention that our barn is a bit farther from our house than yours, and on a similar incline. although we dont have the eagle's nest like you in our house ;> lover boy says it is supposed to service a much longer distance than either of us have. |
