Do any of you ever use essential oils with your cows? I was reading through my most recent copy of "Dairy Goat Journal" and there was an article explaining how to use a few essential oils for goat care. The author used Eucalyptus globulus for any runny noses or eyes. She would wipe a drop of it under the nostrils of the affected animal and it would usually be all that was needed to stop a respiratory issue. She also used peppermint oil diluted in olive oil to discourage external parasites and it also helped with bloat. Lavender and lemon were also discussed. She wrote the book, Livestock Herbal. Anybody read that? Reviews? Opinions?

I ordered the book, The Complete Herbal Handbook for Farm and Animal, which is an older book but I find sometimes that the older books have some great wisdom in them! I will let you know what I learn.
Also ordered the book, The Accessible Pet, Equine and Livestock Herbal: choosing abundant wellness for your creatures. It had mixed reviews; however, it was the book written by the same person who wrote the article in the Dairy Goat magazine. So, I'll see what I learn there as well.
I know of a vet who uses essential oils in calming the small animals that come into her clinic...she works back in New York. So, it is being done and I think there are some great benefits to using the essential oils.

I already use essential oils for my family's health and appreciate their benefits...use them in my soaps as well. So, here it goes...I'll dive into it using them for Clover as I definitely want her to be as healthy as possible naturally!

I use essential oils in soaps and in aromatherapy, and cleaning, also MaryJane's fly control recipe. I have not used them on the cows. Yes, lead the way. I would much rather use natural remedies before harsher more harmful remedies.

I haven't used essential oils on my herd, other than the uses Ron mentioned but I use them on myself and swear by them. Mountain Rose Herbs has quality oils. But beware, a little goes a long way. They're very potent. If you put them on your skin undiluted, they almost burn you. I'd love to incorporate oils into my cow protocol. Lead the way Charlene!
