maryjane	Posted - Dec 09 2018 : 5:07:47 PM Since I have to milk my girls at 6 tomorrow morning before reporting for jury duty, I thought I'd wish you a good morning tonight. Stella and Mia are in the sewing room making gifts for Christmas. Jasper is tucked in for the night. Layla is snuggled up against the cold. Our Christmas lights are twinkling. And I just had a piece of Bara Brith toast. All is well!

NellieBelle	Posted - Dec 17 2018 : 04:15:49 AM Good morning MaryJane. Never a good feeling to find cows missing. Little mischief makers. Thankful everything turned out well. Like you said it could have been a worse outcome, but it wasn't and that's the good news. Tummy aches and diarrhea. No lessons learned, I'm sure they would do it over again, given the chance. But perhaps not so anxious to try right away. Ha! Enjoy your day and week ahead.
maryjane	Posted - Dec 16 2018 : 3:38:14 PM It's warmed up here and raining today, but yesterday was sunny. Jury duty this past Monday and Tuesday was hard. I think I'm still recovering. Today's milk went to Jasper, the chickens, and a couple of fruit trees. On Wednesday afternoon, I looked out my office window and wondered where my cows were. I noticed something moving out my other window and realized the cows were loose. Apparently, after I was done milking, I didn't get the gate completely latched. It took them several hours to test it, but woohoo! they moved fast once they were free. I grabbed Nick and Lucas to help me round them up. Unbelievably, they'd wandered all the way over, traipsing through the crusty snow, to where I had the calves this past summer and found a metal garbage can about half full of grain pellets. I always keep a bungee cord across the top. They couldn't get the bungee cord off so they stomped on the can (nearly flattening it) until some of its contents spilled out and then of course, they ate. I kept vigil for bloat and was relieved when that didn't happen but for two days after, Miss Daisy and Maggie had terrible diarrhea (plus it stank to high heaven). I had to give them several warm water baths throughout the day. They had it on their backs, all over their legs, pretty much everywhere. Strangely, I didn't mind having to clean them I was so relieved they didn't bloat. This morning their digestive systems seemed back to normal. I administered lots of probiotics and gave them nothing but grass hay to eat. I'm so thankful I was spared the heartache and consequences of bloat. Ha, Daisy felt so lousy the next morning, she didn't come when I called her name to milk her (that never happens). And she stood around all day moaning. Do you think she learned her lesson? Probably not, but I did. Plan on the impossible 'cause where there's grain, there's a cow willing to die for it.
NellieBelle	Posted - Dec 10 2018 : 04:24:26 AM Good morning MaryJane and all! Early morning milking is so peaceful. Calm, quiet, and before the day starts to unfold and the days activities begin. Sounds as if all is well there at the farm. We are at a brrr factor of 11 degrees this morning. The warm up will be welcome. Working in the greenhouse you would never know it was that cold. Actually got too warm in there yesterday. May everyone's day be a good one.
