The months roll along quickly. Days are filled with work. Garlic is planted. Putting things to bed for the winter. Mulched roses and raspberries, getting heated elements for waterers and winterizing hen house and quail pens. All six cows/heifers have been AI'd within days of each other. Should know in the next couple of cycles who took and who didn't. Nellie, Darla, Millie, Estella, Esther and Hazel all did very good. Hazel was a bit apprehensive, but got it done. So winter will be upon us soon. No snow here so far. Still in 50's-70's.

The cow gals keep me hopping. Windy here today. I was hoping to clean windows but unless the wind dies down that's not happening today. Butchered quail instead. Should do more, but did 8-9 for us and 3 for the hawk. I have plenty of eggs for boiling. The little Egg Pod makes removing the shell easy peasy. I held a couple out for our supper and rest will go to freezer. Cloudy and overcast with a bit of mist, the wind makes it feel cooler than it is. Yes, between this ole washing machine and my wash board I should have a couple of back-ups in case electricity goes. I need to make a dessert to go with supper so better get to moving.

That's a great backup washing machine. Very cool that you're getting it working again Janet. I actually used one like that when I lived on the remote Anderson Ranch on the Snake River/Joseph Plains right after I'd lived at Moose Creek, 25 miles from road's end. We didn't have electricity.

One of my former employees used a sun oven that he kept here for his lunches. He almost always put a pizza in it in the morning sometime that he ate for lunch.

Winds are picking up again this morning, which is melting the snow. It's supposed to be sunny and cold today, like in the teens.

Love your coverlet by the way!

The storm would have made my adrenaline going. Scary. I started sweet potatoes like you mentioned but when I dug them up they were about the size of my fingers. Should have got them in the ground sooner I'm thinking. Tasty but small. My latest little project is an old wooden wash machine. The gears and fly wheel were froze up, but I have everything working smoothly now. Just have to put some barrel wax in some leaks and tighten her up and she can work once again. Other cool thing I'm going to try is a Sun Oven. May come in handy. Anxious to try it out. Tomorrow is to be in the 70's and I hoping I can get windows washed one more time before cold sets in.

Wow, Janet. Six cows for AI. You have a bonafide dairy these days.

I turned the water on in my chickens waterer yesterday in preparation for some winter cold headed our way. We've have ferocious winds, so strong they moved my big heavy, custom-built 1958 Yellowstone trailer a foot off its jacks, bending one of them. So, we put her in the barn for the winter. I was hoping to use it for my getaway all winter, but not until I figure something out for winds like that. I was in it when the gusts started, then sheets of rain, then lightning so I ran down the hill, observing large pine trees bending close to horizontal. I barely kept my feet on the ground.

Daisy and daughter Jubilee are doing great. Daisy still providing more than a dozen families with milk.

I harvested my first-ever sweet potatoes from one I started using the ole toothpick in a jar method. I'm trying to save them for our Thanksgiving dinner but keep eating them raw they're so good.

Also, a great harvest of rose hips this year. Today, I'm going to attempt a wreath since they're already bowed.

I'm making a coverlet out of Nick's many denim jeans. He kept them all, even when they were too worn to wear. He just couldn't toss anything that might have a shot at being used somehow, someday.
