Delivery was smooth as ice, 3 am. Momma Buttercup seems fine--easy peasy to milk afterward. Julie is going to raise this calf. Her children are super excited to bottle feed (I'll supply the milk). I'll let you know what they name him.

Here's little Wilbur with his companion Peaches. Julie said he's doing very well and her children give him plenty of attention.

Nice travel tote for the little guy. Glad Buttercup had an easy delivery. Now for the milking! We've been getting nice rains, and have totaled around 2.5" in the last week or so. It really helped the crops and gardens, and of course the grass. Raspberries have been abundant and I've been putting them away for later on, except for the few I eat while picking. I love them fresh off the vine. Joe would rather have his in deserts. Doing the chores for the neighbors the last several days, so have been busy. Getting Estella into the routine. She comes in and lets me latch her in the stanchion, brush her, clean her udder, even lets me attach the milker, but things can change once the calf arrives. Sometimes things fly right out the window when that get that baby. Hoping for the best, but will see how it goes. So far so good. Looks like mowing today. I would like to can some beef, but will not do everything in one day. July nearly half over.

They're still pondering the perfect name, but the entire family, including their Whippet dog and horse are entralled with the newcomer.

He took to a bottle right away and stood up and walked within no time at all. His choice of carriage at 5:30 am was the back of Connie's Prius fitted with a soft quilt.

Momma Buttercup was perfectly content afterward. Labor is hard work, although hers was very brief, maybe only ten contractions.

It's plenty hot and smoky here most days but it seems like we get a good night breeze to give us a new start each day. I'm enjoying a good cool-down right now with all the windows open.

We have an overgrowth of deer this year. I'm noticing that they're eating all the prickly lettuce and meadow salsify in my prairie for which I'm grateful. They can have every last one. Right now the St. John's Wort is in bloom for pollinators. Lots of butterflies and zillions of bees of all kinds. Lovely to behold.

The little bird nest I found in my raspberries was a Rusty blackbird, the female with some rust spots and the male jet black with yellow eyes. All the babies successfully hatched and left the nest--fun to watch the process.

Congrats to all! I see some white markings! How adorable! It's been a while since we've seen a new calf. I'm happy everything went smoothly. That's always a great relief. Yes, the name, the whole experience of bottle feeding and naming the calf should be fun.
