I wasn't kidding when I said winter was on its way. We woke up to 2 inches of snow this morning. Most of it has melted but it's supposed to drop to 20 degrees tonight.

My bees are insulated and tucked in with plenty of honey stores.

I've been picking the last of our apples today and filling every cold storage space I can find (our root cellar has plenty of apples already).

How's the weather where you are? I don't think we got a frost until the end of October or first part of November last year.

Your snow may be early, but it's kinda pretty. Rain, rain, and more rain. Not good right at this moment because, Nellie evidently stepped on one of her teats. It's bad. I did what I could but with the rain, it was packed with mud and the slab is hanging. I cleaned it as best I could but I know it's not good enough. Slathered salve on and put a teat wrap on. Vet will be here at 12:30 and we will see just how bad it is and go from there. I'm heart sick and a wreck. Calf is still on her and we are going to try and keep it that way if possible. She just had him on Sept. 21st. Ranger had surgery too. The male snip variety. So he has the cone on which he's not liking. Too much drama for me right now. At least Joe is feeling some better, which I'm thankful for. Well, if we don't float away, I will give an update when I can. Heartsick in Iowa.

I can't stop picking apples. They're so beautiful this year. I rarely find a worm hole. This variety is super crisp and full of sweetness that drips down your chin when you take a snowy, ice-cold bite.

Cydnie picked a box also. I'm losing daylight. By tomorrow they will have frozen. But there's been a mama Moose w/calf visiting lately. Let's hope they dine on them.

When I put the girls out onto pasture (what we call our long pasture) last Saturday, they ran to a pile of walnut leaves that had fallen to the ground from a tree on the other side of the fence. They went crazy for the leaves. I didn't even wait until I checked whether or not walnut leaves and cows are a good idea--I herded them back out promptly, Miss Daisy frantically eating leaves as she walked backward. Guess what? Just that little bit made her milk taste kind of sour for Sunday's milk. Cows are what they eat for sure.
