I've been worried about those of you experiencing extreme cold and hope your cows (and bees, etc.) are doing okay. Nick said that in the early 70s, temps here (without wind chill) dropped to 50 below. And I remember during that same time frame being in Minnesota when the temps were that low. It was crazy. And dangerous.

Today was Pioneer Day in Moscow and the girls dressed the part. Mia made herself a lunch that mimicked what they would have had for lunches back then.

Well, the wind blew and the pooooo flew, out of the beehives anyway. :) The honey bees are flying like mad, cleaning out, pooh, dead bees and filling their stores up with the feeding tray and back to the hive. Joe and I just stood and watched them after milking. Mesmerizing. The sun peeks out now and then and it's so balmy and trying to trick us into thinking spring is near. However, we have a way to go yet. Hope your honeybees are still doing great.

Your hay prowess is impressive, Janet. I try to let the young chaps living here do as much of it as possible, because, like you say, it IS a workout. Likewise, your green thumb activities, even new trees from seed (never done that).

It's pouring rain right now, but by Tuesday it's supposed to snow with temps around 5 degrees. At least we know the cold is coming, otherwise wouldn't we be surprised with as warm as it's been. While it's still so warm, I'm going to check on my bees today and clean out the dead bees on the bottom that they don't always get carried out the door.

Dreaming' peaches in Idaho ...

Good morning! I've been doing quite a bit of thinking, planning, wondering, contemplating, pondering, considering, mulling over, and ruminating on just about everything lately. Perhaps if I had my little pie bird out to aid in all of that. I think that's what winter is partly for. However yesterday, it was going after alfalfa hay and it was a challenge yesterday, as I had to climb to the top of the stack in barn and throw it down to a hay wagon to Joe, then jump down and go to the pick up where Joe threw it on the truck while I stacked it. We got that load home and unloaded in cow barn, then we went after another load elsewhere for grass hay/alfalfa for the steers and horses. Got it unloaded in other barn and so it was a hay day. Great workout! My Lupines, Lemon seeds and Moringa tree seeds have sprouted. I moved some to the greenhouse. I am going to plant another flat of Lupines and some Foxglove this week. Going to hit 50 today and then I think temps drop again. Up and down weather. I'm anxious to see it the honey bees do any cleansing flights today. It's to be overcast and damp so they may not. I'm hoping many peach pies for you and your little pie bird. Awwww, spring, peach blossoms cometh! Have a lovely Sunday!

Happiness is sitting at your table on a late Saturday afternoon with a cup of just-roasted/ground coffee, plenty of cream from your morning milking and a sweet little pie bird for companionship as you think about one very special peach you grew. Only one. And thinking maybe this coming summer your bird might be singing "peach pie!"

Good day to all! Noon here already. Mia is so cute in her pioneer outfit, dressed for the part. What fun. Finally up to 0. Last couple of days were nasty. Yes, it's been down right wicked cold, but it won't last long. I put the cow gals in the barn two nights, and the steers could get in the other barn. The only ones out in the elements were the horses and they stayed to one side of the large hay bales. We didn't find it all that horrific for ourselves as we can dress for it, but I did feel bad for the animals. Tomorrow is to be in 20's and the weekend 40's-50's. So other than one waterer freezing up ( the old type with the bulb) we're all good. The honey bees, it will be anyone's guess. Will probably know by Sunday if they survived. Carpenter, electrician and myself all working.
