When I went to check on the girls about an hour ago, I found a trail of blood in the snow that lead me to Lizzy's ear. Somehow she tore it. I found a spot right next to a metal fence panel where there's a lot of blood but both Nick and I looked and looked for any sharp edges and found none at all. It's a mystery. I brought her in and cleaned it good with warm water and then sprayed it carefully with iodine making sure I didn't get any in her eye. I put her in a separate pen for the night. Tomorrow morning I'll disinfect it again. I doubt there's anything a vet can do to stitch it back together. It'll just have to be her brand of body marking. Poor girl. You can tell it hurts. Both sides flop around separately. She tore it all the way through.

Yes, that's hard. I know when working with Millie for pink eye, she was hesitant to go into the stanchion, probably thinking she was going to be worked on again. So glad Lizzy's ear has healed up without complications, and you've gained her trust. Seems like it takes a while after a health or injury ordeal.

It has healed nicely. It took Lizzy a while to warm back up to me after I had to restrain her to treat it. But she and I are the best of friends again.

Poor Lizzy. It does look sore. Just hate it when one of our animals gets an injury or ill. Just hope it heals quickly and without any complications.

I checked and yes, she had her orange Bang's tag in. I'd put it in because initially she was going to travel to Montana with M'lady, Sophie, and Ester Lily. Having three of them leave all at once was hard enough. I decided I couldn't handle four leaving, so I kept her for the time being.

I just had a thought. Did she have an ear tag in that ear? Not all of my cows do. I will go back over her records. I usually don't put them in (because they can be so injurious) until an animal travels to a new home. If so, her injury would make more sense. Something like, it got caught on the fence as she was doing something stupid like trying to put her head through, and when she pulled back, it ripped out.
