I made a list this morning, not a list of New Year's Resolutions, but critter supplies: organic chicken scratch, Redmond salt blocks, and minerals. I seem to have plenty of udder treatment on hand and Modesto organic pellets. For the most part, our critters' larder is full, just the way you want things going into a new year. I hope my bees feel the same way.
It snowed on and off yesterday, nothing too significant. It's winter.
Idaho State Department of Agriculture comes today for a raw milk sample (we always pass muster), and I'll be making a run to our local feed store for the items on my list.
The only two things I have on my long-term 2019 list is to pour concrete in my parlor and the endless "fix fence!" item that never leaves my list it seems.
What are some things on your 2019 to-do list? Cydnie and I are closing in on our new "hand-held compatible" MJF website. We've been working on it for 5 months now. The back end of a website (the pages and pages of coding no one sees) is downright gnarly. I did the front-end and Cydnie did the back end. She's done a great job paying attention to all the little annoying details.
Well, guess it's time to get the week started and think about getting bundled up for milking. |

Good news about your bees. Our winter weather has been warm/cold/warm/cold. Poor bees won't know what to think, but so far so good. I keep replacement valve parts too. In the barn in a drawer. I think it's good to replace them so often. Sun is shining bright with 2inches of snow. I cancelled my appt. yesterday after I went a couple miles. Decided I didn't care to tackle bad roads for 40 miles up and 40 miles back. So will try tomorrow if roads are better. It's melting here so I'm guessing they will be fine. Mmmm. Honey butter. Sounds so good. Haven't played Clue in years, but then, you need enough people to play. Have fun! |

Silly boys. I've had a pine cone wedge beneath the paddle, which means no one could get water, but never a flow that wouldn't stop. That's a drag. Happy to hear it fixed itself. I keep plenty of BarBarA replacement valves on hand.
I've turned the Raes onto honey-butter. Huge hit with the girls and Lucas. It's easy. I let some of our butter soften and then add a bit of our honey and mix it with a fork.
So far, it's been a huge hit served on squares of our corn bread mix (3 cups plus 1 1/2 c. milk--if I have sour cream I stir some of that in or buttermilk).
Yum. Last night I served it with a pot of white chili (recipe in Milk Cow Kitchen). Our CLUE game we started will need to be finished some time today.
Now, it's off to milk.

We have snow, and it's still snowing but I don't think it's suppose to amount to much. I guess we will wait and see. Oh the things we did to get our ears pierced. Thank goodness the procedure is less an ordeal than it used to be. Yes I remember the alcohol and I did have some earrings that were made specifically for inserting right after the piercing, but remember the turning of the little hoops to keep them clean and alcohol applied, and keeping the holes open. Memories. What a hoot. Today is Dr. P appt. Then I hoping that's it for a while. The plumbers were out yesterday, late, because when I got home I noticed ice had formed in a line from the BarBarA down into the horse pasture. Thought it looked odd, so when I went to investigate, the area was all wet and muddy and some standing water. So, they came right out and even though they went through the electric fence, (they didn't see it) and I didn't know they would drive up to the BarBar unit. They said there was no leak and the calves must have been playing with it or something may have stuck. Anyway a relief to hear nothing is wrong. I will have to watch my little hooligans and see if they're up to mischief. When Joe got home he repaired the fence, I'd had enough cold, moving cows, horses and steers, opening and closing gates to keep animals in their own pastures. So all is good again. (for now) |

My farm life NATIONAL MILK DAY day ended on a good note because with it hitting 50 degrees, I decided to give my four bee hives a thorough wellness check just before dark today and found all four hives to be alive and well. I was worried about the newest hive I'd created towards the end of summer, but they're hanging in there and still have plenty of honey.
Janet, my uncle pierced my ears by putting a clothespin on them until they were numb and then a wooden spool behind and a needle with thread. I remember keeping the thread in for quite some time. I disinfected the thread with rubbing alcohol and then rotated it through my lobe until a solid tunnel of flesh formed. Anyway, it worked, but the way they do it now is much better.
Sleep well. And yes, more lovely milk again tomorrow morning. |

Today is National Milk Day! And I'm so thankful ours comes straight from our cows, on our own farms. We get more than milk as MaryJane made apparent above with the idealic pictures. The beautiful views from our parlors, the gorgeous cow tails, sunrises and sunset from the barn doors. The family cat sunning himself on bales of hay/straw. Daily life on the farm. What's not to love? |

Oh, the things the grand girls are doing bring back so many memories. The babysitting job, now the ear piercing. My dad wouldn't let me get my ears pierced as long as I was living under his roof, so after I moved out, it was one of the first things I had done. Of course it wasn't done at a salon, no, ice cubes and potato and long large needle was the procedure back then. When I had the second set put in years later I went to a salon. Quite simple and quick. Yes, the girls or young ladies are growing up. Still cool here but not bad. Suppose to get some wintery mix this evening. Friday and hair appt. |

How wonderful--making a home for so many little dancing fairies. Just as sweet as can be. I gave Cydnie one of my orchids, a little multi-colored one like in your photos and she said it's blooming already.
Relived to hear your youngster bubbas are drinking like a bull. Much easier that way.
Hope your cold snap lifts soon. It was warm enough yesterday for some of my bees to venture out.
I just realized it's Friday. Yay! That means my grand girls will be around more. Mia got her ears pierced last week. Growing up they are. |

Maggie's tail is gorgeous. Just the way we like to see them. I'm afraid my girls' tails are not looking so pretty right now. We've gone from 40's and 50 last week to 14 degrees this morning. Sun is shining but it's cold. The young steers finally caught on to the BarBarA. Thankful for that. Some of my orchids arrived yesterday. They felt pretty cool, even with the warm pack but they were wrapped good so will see how things turn out. I transplanted two miniatures into little log openings this morning. I will pull them all out of their pots today and see what the roots look like and put them in all new plant medium. Here are a couple,   This second one has a strong fragrance. We've had a string of sunny days this week. How pretty is Maggie's reddish tail when the sun hits it? I love brushing tails.
In addition, I love taking a moment to look up and out from my milking parlor.
Mr. Jasper loves the sun also.
And my girls, well, they never say no when it comes to food.
But I always say yes to a sunrise.
I know you're enjoying the beauty of farm life on your farm also. Aren't we lucky?! |
