Here's an awful injury my milk cow suffered the day before yesterday. More pics and what we did to help her coming soon. Stay tuned (she's healing nicely).

Haymen!
Ron Posted - Dec 20 2014 : 1:57:27 PM
They probably just think we're all nuts. ( cow thinking) why do they run around doing things called chores? Why do they do this thing called work for that stuff called money? Why do they were them clothes things and live in these boxes called a house? Humans, just don't understand them. Glad they bring me hay though.
Jersey James Posted - Dec 20 2014 : 1:43:31 PM
I sense that they aren't 100% sure about us either...
Ron Posted - Dec 20 2014 : 1:28:11 PM
Thanks James. Sometimes don't know what to think of these cows.

Best wishes for you and Harriet Ron.

Things are still a little strange with Harriet. The quarter thst had the tip of the udder hurt is the one I am working with. It was like she just would not let the milk down and it was getting harder by the day. Of course I freaked. The funny thing is it don't seem like mastitis and I am able to get a little milk out of it and the calf still tries to nurse it but just not flowing like the others. I am thinking She deliberately is holding back and drying off the quarter. Never heard of such a thing but I don't have lots of experience. I have the antibiotic infusions but decided to hold off. She is eating, drinking, and not acting in pain. Have the Cow on doses of c powder two times a day. Bout all I can do!

And today, Ron? How's Harriet? And, how are you doing?
Ron Posted - Dec 18 2014 : 11:03:22 AM
Morning Charlene! Yes just got in from milking a while ago and I don't think She is getting works. The quarter is still firmer than I think it should be but not near as tight as it was. She is eating and drinking and doing everything She should be so I am still concerned. Will keep the vitamin c going in two times a day a milking the quarter all I can. I really don't want to do the antibiotic route at all.

This group is just great...helping each other out. Thanks for making me smile this morning, Ron and Janet! And, Ron, we all are rooting for you and Harriet. Sounds like you are making some progress, albeit slowly.

With mail service the way it is now a days, I know I could get it there faster on horseback, cowback, buffalo back, LOL, but alas, I will have to rely on them once again. You're sure welcome.
Ron Posted - Dec 18 2014 : 08:11:27 AM
Thanks Janet. Wished I just lived a farm over.
NellieBelle Posted - Dec 18 2014 : 08:03:05 AM
That's what I ended up doing was buying a bag of 25 I think. Won't ever have a need for that many. I tried to buy them locally but no one stocked them. So, no worries, I'll have them in the mail tomorrow.
Ron Posted - Dec 18 2014 : 07:58:46 AM
I was going to order one but they come in a bag of like fifty or something! I don't like the ones with spikes on them. Uugghhhh. Just wonder sometimes what goes through minds.
Thank you Janet! One less thing I gotta think about!
NellieBelle Posted - Dec 18 2014 : 07:48:17 AM
Ron, I have more Quiet Wean weaners, than I know what to do with. I will send some up your way, in case you want to use one, and if you don't you may want to use them another time. I will get those out to you tomorrow in the mail.
Ron Posted - Dec 18 2014 : 07:10:33 AM
Good morning Janet. Trying to hold off on the antibiotic infusion in the one quarter. I have been giving Her the c powder about 2T two times a day and milking the quarter all I can when I can. Last night the quarter was still pretty firm but not as firm as it was. That is the quarter with the injured test on the bottom so I am washing with iodine and using cream to keep moist and milking. Calf is nursing it also which helps. I judt hate to separate them or force wean the calf especially this time of year when it is so cold and dark. I think it would hurt both animals. Had the girls look for a quiet wean hear just in case but not availble around here. The beef guys just say separate them cold turkey they will get over it. Just not the way I want to raise animals.

Ron, How is Harriet doing?

Thank you Janet! Sounds perfect and is now on my Amazon wishlist.

Charlene, I have a book called, The Cattle Health Handbook. Preventive Care, Disease Treatments & Emergency Procedures,by Heather Smith Thomas. I have found it handy more than once. They have great drawings of Anatomy of the cow. And perfect for layperson.
CloversMum Posted - Dec 15 2014 : 10:14:37 AM
Thank you James. I definitely would try the vet route first, but like you said, sometimes there just isn't time so its good to at least be able to try something. Actually, does anyone have a particular book on cow medicine that they'd recommend? Something written for the layperson, not a veterinarian. Of course, it would be in addition to my Milk Cow Kitchen book.
Jersey James Posted - Dec 15 2014 : 09:18:29 AM
Charlene, we had olive and avacado oil and one other I can't remember. I don't think the type of oil is too important. We had a half gallon of oil and 2.5 gallons of water.

Ron, you put the tube down the throat.

Let me say that I am beyond not qualified to advise anyone on good vet procedures. We had an emergency, Lucy was down, dizzy, and foaming at the mouth. We did the best with what we had and as fast as we could. We were very lucky it worked out.

The task is to break up the froth on the surface so that trapped air can escape from the rheumen. I know people who use pepto, dish washing soap, etc.

I would just say Charlene that I think you are wise to have a plan and be prepared.
Ron Posted - Dec 14 2014 : 3:24:38 PM
Did you have to open the cow or put tube down throat?
