Just what we need ladies, a calving sensor! If only Charlene had one this past weekend ;> lover boy says it is about $300 at tractor supply per device with the first year of communication included, then $150 per year after that.

https://us.moocall.com/

"Moocall Calving Sensors measure contractions and predict when your cow will give birth.

Get alerted via SMS, app and email one hour before she calves. Leave your name and number below for more information.

How Moocall Technology Works:

This non-invasive, tail mounted sensor gathers over 600 pieces of data a second. It can accurately predict when your cow is most likely to give birth by measuring tail movement patterns triggered by labour contractions. When they reach a certain level of intensity over a period of time it then sends an SMS text alert directly to your cell phone on average 1 hour prior to calving."

no kidding maryjane, windows upgrade leads from one thing to fifty others. and with everything being cloud based now you can hardly just pay once and buy the software - you have to pay a few dollars every month for the rest of your life.

you never know, bea may not have taken ;> if so you can borrow it after sally to see what you think. we should know the end of this month how that is panning out.

Thanks Cindy! Wow. What an offer. Let me ponder for a bit because with this last round of calves I'd rigged up lights that made it so all I had to do was open my eyes from my bed, roll over, and look down on my cow. However, once I knew it could happen at any minute, I apparently willed myself not to sleep longer than 15 minutes at a time. It was a long month. I have a calf due Feb. 17 so I'd need to get my own with Bea coming late Feb. also. To be honest, it's the upgrade that worries me. I already have too many of those complications with my business. And it's never just a matter of paying the $150. I'm facing a Windows upgrade right now so I can run a silly little paper cutter for my milk labels. Geez. It's a full time job. A Windows upgrade means 50 things will go bat-crazy on my computer.

maryjane,

i am an adroid girl so won't be much help to you. i do know that on my android phone i can set my text alerts to be different sounds/decibel levels than say phone calls, or VM messages, or other notifications. i can essentially set each and every "notification sound" differently for noise and volume.

there may also be a volume limitation on the iphone that can be hacked. some phones have them now as they are worried about lawsuits due to hearing damage, and so there are software limitations as to volume - but you might be able to hack that. i think this is a task for Brian perhaps?

Also MJ, if we get one of these things then after sally calves in november you/I can coordinate calving and i can send you ours to use. hopefully bea is due late feb, but then we wouldn't have another calving for a long time - so you could test this out to see how it works at your place to see if it works well and can text through the house ;>

Cindy, do you think there's a way to make the alert for an incoming text much louder? I have an iPhone 7 plus and can't see how to do that. Texts do work better around here so maybe the Moocall technology would allow me less trips to the barn.

I looked into too, I think I even posted it a while back, but I've decided cameras will work better for me. I'm around the cows routinely when nearing birth. Just need to peek at them to know when I'm needed in the barn. I think the Moocall is a pretty innovative device.

since it uses texting and not calling maryjane, is the metal truly an issue? granted you have a nice metal setup at your place ;> i only ask because i can't get any cell service at the farm, at all, but i can text in/out all day long. same at the lake. so i thought sms texting communications got through a lot more.

lover boy is interested, we'll see if miss sally is adorned with some moocall jewelry this fall.

I looked into this a while back but I have too much metal on my buildings for it to work. Dang. I would love such a device. I've even tried a baby monitor. No doubt high tech will get more high tech soon enough and they'll make it so metal isn't a problem.
