So today was the day for our Elli's second calf to be born. Thank goodness as Elli's udder was starting to need its own zip code. Here's our little Emmy Lou. I'm thinking she must look a lot like her dad. She's much darker than Elli's last calf.

Emmy decided to come out back feet first which was a little startling for us. We saw back feet and could see her tail wiggling. We had a moment of deciding to pull or not to pull and Elli pushed out Emmy's back half and then her tail stopped moving, so pull it was. She slid right out and started breathing, but was very slimy around her nostrils and sounded congested. We ended up holding her up by her back legs and toweling off all of the yuck around her face and then turned her over to Elli who did her thing. In the future I would add a baby nose sucker (technical term) to my calving kit. That's what I felt like we needed in this scenario.

I love this picture. It's an "Aw Mom, I'm clean already!" sort of look.

Sure hope Emmy Lou is hungry. Look at that udder!

Here you can see that Emmy's going to have white just above three of her hooves. The tip of her tail is also white.

My daughter, Kierra, loves this picture because Emmy's nose is wrinkled up.

So far nursing is a challenge because Elli is so engorged, but Emmy has managed to have a go at both of the front teats with assistance. I have a feeling we are going to need to help Elli out a lot at the beginning. She has way more going on than Emmy Lou can handle! Once her teats get back down to normal size it will get better I'm sure.

Nice to hear from you, and see Emmy Lou. My how time goes so fast. A year in October. She's a pretty little heifer.

Wonderful update! I enjoyed re-reading the entire thread and to hear all is well with your herd.

So I realized posting pictures of Alex's new baby that I should post an updated one of Miss Emmy Lou. She was a year in October. I call her my pocket cow. She is our smallest Jersey, although she is a mini by no means, and she loves people. If I could put her in my pocket and take her places she would gladly go! When we get the timing right (not too cold for a calf and not at the same time her mama is in milk) we'll breed her to Xander. Emmy is a half sister to Alex's new calf. I think their coloring is very similar.

So nice to see the photos of Elli and Emmy Lou. You can see Emmy Lou has grown. They don't stay little for long do they?

Elli is looking good Keeley. She has turned into a beautiful cowess for sure.

I just realized she doesn't have her mama's banging bangs yet. We'll have to see if she gets them.

Elli looks positively tiny in this picture. That's a challenge for her. When I milk Alex right after Elli it makes it clear what a difference there is in size.

What a perfect age. I really enjoy that age and bottle feeding. Pure sweetness and a great time for bonding.

I realized I hadn't posted any pictures of Emmy Lou since she was born. Here are a few from the other day.

She's a tough model to work with since she believes everyone should have milk for her when they visit.

Congratulations Keeley! Emmy Lou deserves an Emmy (get it?).

He has white on the end of his tail too but a few inches up he has black hairs that have almost grown down over the white hairs, but they're still there. When I had him on the tilt table at WSU, I combed and inspected it. I think as a calf, the entire tip of his tail was probably all white. As humans, we turn gray when we age, bulls turn black. Samson is an awesome bull. Sooooo congrats!!!!

She is a Samson calf. It took us quite a few tries, but it was so worth it! :) I was looking back at pictures of Samson and it looks like he has white markings on on his feet and belly too. So far her coloring is looking like it's more from his side of the genetics I think. Time will tell.

Wonderful news, Keeley!!!! And such a sweet name. She's adorable. Yay, a girl! I'm with Kierra, love it when they crinkle their noses. What a relief all went well with the backwards birth. Elli's udder is HUGE! So happy you let us know. Big smile on my face. Is she a Samson calf?

Darling little Emmy Lou! Great photos. That breech birth would be startling but so thankful all worked out okay. Yes, Eli has one large udder. More for Emmy Lou to delight in. Thanks so much for the announcement and posting Keeley. Made my day! More fresh milk soon!
