Thanks, MaryJane. I'm really excited to see what sort of milk Mabel produces ... only two years to wait! :)

Stella and I were discussing the Little House on the Prairie books. In that context I was telling her about my grandmother's life and she said, "That was only four times ago." Since all those breeds, Guernsey, Jersey, and Ayrshire were the same once, the general rule of thumb is four generations.

MaryJane, can a cow be registered if she's only half Jersey? Just curious ... Either way, Mabel is a keeper. (I've already had two people contact me about her ... one word. Nope.)

Delightful news Charlene. Just the way you would want things to go. The photos are great and Betsy and Mabel are looking good! Good going Ethan with the shade relief! Thanks so much for sharing!

Milking was a great success! Betsy did really well and I am so proud is Ethan who had a major hand in the success. I'm posting several of our pictures. The first one shows her in the milk stanchion with a tight flank rope. It was loosened right after the picture :) but we didn't want to take any chances while Betsy had her hobble put on. She never once tried to kick. What a sweet spirit! Mabel favors one tear and you could see normal milk coming from that teat while the other teats still had colostrum. The colostrum was frozen and saved!

This last photo is funny because Ethan set up shade for Mabel in their temporary birthing suite. In the pic, Betsy says thanks for the shade! Only her head is in it!!

But things are going incredibly smoothly!!

Gosh, I picked a bad day to go missing in action. Congrats Charlene. Fantastic news. I'm so very happy for you. And a heifer! What a dream come true. Good job Betsy. Good job Tony.
