Just as spring daffodils, tulips and rain are signs of spring, so are sightings of these little critters.

Am I the only one with the Peggy Sue song still with me?

no janet, anti-venom is too expensive to keep on hand. we just found out last year that recently the local hospitals even stopped carrying it - truly. snake bites happen so often, and everyone goes to the ER and then you don't really know what they were bitten by and the snake venom is so so expensive. so now you wait in the ER until it looks really bad and shows true evidence, and then depending on your age/health/extent of damage they either fly in anti-venom or send you home to live through it without anything.

we have a neighbor at the lake where my parents lives, that has stepped outside TWICE with flipflops and gotten bit on the foot by a copperhead. know they are copperheads as her hubby/her kill and sack the snake to take with them. the first time they gave her anti-venom, the second time she did the wait routine and didn't get any. her toe went black and looked as if gangrene or something was setting in, but after several months it goes back to normal unless there was long-term nerve damage. nice, huh?

our rule is no sandals or flip flops around the farm. for us or guests. lover boy and i only were boots, if it is daytime we don't mind guests stepping out onto the summer kitchen or porch with sandals - but NEVER at night. you never know when a snake will decide to lay on your doorstep. or if the cats will kill one and leave it at the door for us, but it still has that bite reflex for hours afterwards.

ok, enough snake talk. lets all think about chickens, cows, birds, horses, goats, etc.

Cute names Cindy. Too many for naming here. Sometimes if they last long enough we will give them a name like, Ole yeller, or Huck Finn (wanderer), Fuss budget, etc. But kittens not so much. No really dangerous snakes here. Timber rattler but you rarely see them. We welcome snakes here. Bull snakes, prairie snakes, garter snakes. I wouldn't be too thrilled running into a copperhead, but I'm sure they serve a purpose. Do you have to keep anti venom on hand for all the nasty snakes in case of getting bitten?

we have a mottled kitten just like the last one too janet, but she's dove grey with the mottling. but no stage face for ours ;> your kitten is so adorable.

i think we have named the three new kitten/cats: buster, dixie and peggy sue... yes, i have been inspired by y'all. the mottled grey one will be peggy sue, she has been such a difficult one to coax back to the house after hiding in the wood pile from the first night on. something about that wood pile and cats as you well know janet, except here i know we have to have at least a couple of copperhead snakes in our wood pile so i don't exactly love retrieving cats from it this time of year. even in winter we'll find them, but at least then the snakes move so slow you have tons of warning...

This little girl came peeking out from under the tarp on our wood pile. Reminds me of Phantom of the Opera. Split colors down the middle of her face.

send that kitten my way janet, just waiting for a cuddle. we picked up three new kittens from our pastor's house last week. they are actually 6 months old, so at the cat stage, but appear badly inbread so are small for their age. but sweet as can be. we have a similiarly colored tabby as yours pictured here, except he is thin and scrappy and walks bowlegged... he is really sweet and adorable despite all of this.

Yes, just this evening the momma had moved the barn kittens right in the breezeway where the cows come in and out. I was afraid they would get squashed, so we put a board at a slant in front of them to protect them from cow hooves. And my gals don't care for cats and will go out of their way to kick at them so it's a juggling act at best.

I'd take a couple of your sweet kittens, Janet! So cute ... but barn kitties have a rough life as they get bolder and bolder. Now I see why a friend says she doesn't ever want to get attached to the barn kitties...

I always wondered if that cucumber test was really true ... good for Jasper! So sorry to hear Lionel is missing. We, too, have lost our Mickey two weeks ago ... he was the one with the personality plus. I fear he has not just wandered down to the neighbors as he wouldn't be gone this long. Sure do miss that one!

Ha! that is funny! Cucumber test. Lionel has come up missing. We're hoping he just wandered down to the neighbors and coyotes didn't find him.

Such sweetness! When Jasper lays next to my laptop tonight (as is our routine), I'll show him his new relative:)

FYI, we ended up with a fresh cucumber from our test kitchen a couple of weeks ago. When I laid it next to Jasper to surprise him while he was eating, he looked at it, sniffed, and said, "No big deal, I ain't a scaredy cat when it comes to cucumbers." Completely uneventful.
