Posted - Nov 09 2015 : 06:02:21 AM Hi Everyone, We are in the southwest corner of Colorado near Mesa Verde. The hubs and I bought a 10.5 acre piece of land about 2 years ago and have started a little homestead. Well, we are trying anyway. Still working on finishing our house. We just got our first family milk cow, named Shirley. She was out on the range with a bunch of beef cattle! We also have 17 chickens, 5 alpacas, a dog, a nubian goat, a mule, and a Fell pony. Whew! I'm hoping to get going with making all our own dairy products come spring and learning how to can and preserve food, and get a garden going next year. Loving the lifestyle, but we are definitely newbies to all of this. Love the Milk Cow Kitchen book and glad to be a part of this site. :) |

Posted - Nov 09 2015 : 12:13:55 PM Hi! Welcome from the mitten state (Michigan) :) Sounds like you have a wonderful homestead started! My husband and I are also new to learning homesteading, having just got our first animals this Summer. This site has been such a blessing as I've been learned the ropes on having our first family milk cow. I grew up with various other farm animals, but never a cow, so this was ALL new! Great group of cow-lovers here who are always willing to answer your questions. Love it so much! Welcome! |

Posted - Nov 09 2015 : 09:00:59 AM A warm welcome from northern Idaho! We just moved to our land six years ago and have started our collection of farm animals.
You certainly have a variety! Do you shear your alpacas? And do you use their fiber?
Please don't hesitate to jump right in with questions, comments, things you've learned, etc. As Janet mentioned we learn lots from each other. It is a great group!

Would love to hear more about them and pictures. Interesting story already about how you came by Shirley. Love meeting new folks on the chatroom and sharing our experiences. We all learn from each other, no matter how new or veteran. |
