I was looking on Pinterest and I found this homemade Dynamint, I an going to try it next year.

Homemade Dynamint

This make an approximate 2.5% dilution which is suitable for animals, as you want much smaller amount of oils for animals. Make sure you’re using high quality oils!

3/4 c plain lotion, homemade from Girls Guide to Guns and Butter recipe, or plain store bought.

30 drops Peppermint Essential Oil

30 drops Melaleuca Essential Oil

30 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil

20 drops Oregano Essential Oil

20 drops Frankincense Essential oil.

Mix together. Rub all over effected quarter on udder, getting up high into the ‘armpit’ and covering the teat as well. Apply 2-3 times a day, continuing a day after all is okay.

Book? Liz do you have a book out?
maryjane Posted - Sep 11 2014 : 05:34:36 AM
Perhaps the recipe could be in your next book, Liz? I know that for me the learning never stops. One book seems to beg for another that could lead to another ... BTW, the calf photo on page 23 in your book is adorable as well as the calf/chickens pic on your blog. Classic cuteness. And a woofle of hay? Love that word (and the term House Cow). Also, is your stanchion a particular model that you bought or did you build/weld it? I'm trying to think of a set-up that would allow me to do my own hoof trimming and the style of yours looks like it could work because you can get to both sides of the cow and even the back, using the rails for strapping to cradle each foot, one at a time. I do have a squeeze chute that's permanently in place but I'm wanting something smaller right outside my milking parlor so I can just walk a cow in every month after milking and rasp and clip her hooves.

Would you share how you make it?

I made my own using coconut oil, and essential oils of peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus and oregano. I call it "man and beast" because it also works on my husband's sandfly bites! I use it on the cows when they have skin problems - cuts, fly bites, lumps in udder etc. I also find aloe vera is wonderful.

I stopped by Spence before they closed tonight and picked up some Schreiner's herbal livestock spray. Thank you. I already applied some to Clover's head. I'll apply more tomorrow morning.

Since it isn't a situation where a momma would end up eating it (licking her baby), I would think you can try a tiny bit. There's an herbal livestock spray sold at Spence that I like called Schreiner's. I'd try that first. I've been using it on their rear ends right by their tails where the flies have been biting. It heals and also deters.

Clover just had a small horn scur disbudded/removed today at the WSU vet. They told me to be sure to keep the flies away from it as it healed. It was burned so no raw flesh...would it be safe to use this on Clover's head to deter the nasty flies?

I ended up with three of the tubes because they were included in my Hamby orders as a freebie. I put them away and didn't use them because the smell is so strong. I've been spraying my cows regularly for flies (that have gotten much worse in the last two weeks) so I got to thinking, hmmmm, I'm using strong smelling oils like citronella and eucalyptus to deter flies, why not strong MINT on their udders and teats. I dug it out and absolutely LOVE the stuff. I'm even applying it to the nasty places like under their "armpits" where the flies are biting welts and not only has it completely healed those places, it deters the flies. I'm never going to be without it again!!!!!

I ordered mine from Hamby Dairy and Lehman's Home, both online.
CloversMum Posted - Aug 29 2014 : 2:17:28 PM
Where have each of you ordered this?

Me too! I keep some in the barn and ah-hem some in the kitchen for me. After doing dishes or scrubbing floor, my hands are dried out and so I apply some of this to my hands and rub it in. I've even put it on my temples when a headache starts. In the barn I rub it on Nellies udder after I'm done milking. I love the stuff too!
